Since the CA Bike Week portion only started two years ago, do you think it was a good idea to start a weekend event that wants to turn into a full week event, during a bad economy? The Love Ride was a stand alone charity event for 23 years. We rolled it into and partnered with California Bike Week. It is a partnership with all the Southern California dealers. My vision was to create a Sturgis, Daytona or Laconia type event in Southern California - with motorcycle racing, enter- tainment, stunts, vendors village, demo rides, and other biker lifestyle ac- tivities. Love Ride was still the same event as always on sunday, but was attached to all the other activities like racing, vendors, etc that CBW brought to the table. This vision goes back to four or five years ago - with final imple- mentation three years ago. The vision was good, the timing was off. When the decision was made by the Love Ride foundation board of director to move forward, the economy was robust. No one knew the economy was going to tank. 2) I’m sure you’ve heard many people ask, why didn’t you scale down the event this year given the state of the economy? We shaved our expenses way down and tried everything. We worked twice as hard, but the economy killed us. 3) Do you think the late announcement of the talent caused the 80% drop in pre-registration from last year? Do you think it was the lack of a marquee band? No. Southern california is devastated with the recession. When people are unemployed and struggling they are not thinking of charity. Everyone is tightening their belts. Pre-registration was actually down 61% (not 80%) in the number of people registering, but down 70% in total income as compared to last year. This is what prompted our decision to cancel. 4) Why was there no announcement of Dwight Yoakam before the Quick Throttle article and cover image? Dwight came on board much later than normal and we wanted to find another complimenting act and announce both simultaneously. 5) How difficult is it to get a band to play for a charity rate these days? Very difficult. The nature of the music industry has changed. In the past bands used to tour to promote and sell their albums. The tour was a break- even activity. Now the tour is the primary source of their income. You will not believe what some of these bands charge for what they call a one off (one day event, as opposed to a multi city tour)? Some acts like the Foo Fighters, CSN, Jackson Browne, BB King, ZZ Top among others are excep- tions, and have been very good to us, but this year we were plagued with bad luck due to various schedule conflicts, routing issues, management objections, radius clauses, and simple unavailability. Bottom line, we could not produce a complimentary act to Dwight’s incredible music. 6) Oliver, many riders think that Love Ride only supports MDA and therefore not enough money gets directly to the charity due to the high overhead that MDA is known to have. Do you want to speak to that? Is this why you changed charities? I do not know about MDA’s accounting practices. They were very good for us for many years. We just decided to broaden the range of charities we support. 7) How much of your own money have you invested/donated to The Love Ride charities over the years? Harley-Davidson of Glendale spends a large sum as seed money to prime the pump. I don’t make a dime off of this event and neither does anyone else. True we get recognition for doing this. But we only have one part time staffer with very little salary. Everyone else in our organizing committees are volunteers. We have some very real and hard expenses to get the ball rolling. Requirements such as talent deposits, insurance, traffic control equipment, permits, venue rent deposit, police and security expenses, merchandise and souvenir purchases are all needed before the event day. This always puts me and the dealership at great risk. Full-out rain has always been my nightmare! 8) Is it true that you’ve raised over a million dollars a year for the past 17 years? 3
6page

4 We have raised as much as 1.7 million in one year, but we did not hit a million every year. But a million dollar average during the past 17 years sounds about right. (We have a spreadsheet detailing this available to anyone who wants to see it, go to<a href="http://www.quickthrottle.com"> www.quickthrottle.com.)</a> During the past 25 years we have raised over 21 million. 9) Do you think the ticket price of The Love Ride is reasonable or too much? Do you think people will pay more to see a great band? It is reasonable and appropriate. An average concert ticket for profit events exceed $100. Peo- ple will pay more to see their favorite artists - but some are reluctant to come to a biker event to see them, if they are not bikers and are uncom- fortable in a “biker” environment. Remember, this is one of the reasons we started doing the Love Ride was to portray a more positive image for bik- ers. We lowered the price by ten dollars this year. It made no difference. Given the state of the economy our core could not pay and participate. 10) Do you think moving the event to The Fairplex in Pomona was a good decision in hindsight? Comparing apples to apples, peo- ple perceive the Fairplex as a much more ex- pensive undertaking than Castaic. Is that true? No, not really more expensive. Last year we did great there. The Fairplex is set up for doing large events. It has many of the amenities for such events built into it’s infrastructure. We miss the lake, it’s shade trees and rolling hills and it’s inti- mate aesthetics. If you recall at one point before we made this decision there were talks of shut- ting down the Castaic Lake recreation area due to budgetary cut backs by LA county. Additionally, it did not have ideal parking capability. It always bottlenecked and gridlocked. 11) Why did you leave Castaic? What limita- tions did you have there? Did you outgrow it like you did The Ranch? We out grew Cal Amigos Ranch after Love Ride 8. At Castaic we had some very serious expenses with infrastructure, police & security. There was a lack of adequate parking as well, huge bottle- necks, so yes we did sort of outgrow it. 12) Was Jay Leno still planning on participat- ing this year? Oh yes, Jay is a kind, generous, and wonderful man. He has been our Grand Marshall for 24 years. He was saddened to hear about it’s cancellation. 13) When riders talk about The Love Ride, they often say things like, “We need to do this, or we need to do that.” Do you think riders are personally invested in this event? Absolutely, all our volunteers are bikers. Most are saddened. Many participants are still donat- ing and want to see it come back. They don’t care if they will not ride this year. They still have a lot of love in their hearts. 14) I know cancelling The Love Ride was a dif- ficult decision to make. Now that you’ve seen the aftermath, would you have made the same decision? Yes, it was the right decision by our board of directors. The event was about making money for the kids, and those less fortunate. It has never been about breaking even or losing money. We looked at every possible option over and over again - backwards and forwards. The board was convinced, but I wanted everyone to wait until the last minute hoping something would break loose and a miracle would happen, but i finally conceded. 15) We hear you are giving refunds to the pub- lic. Are you getting many refund requests or are people donating it still to the charities? Amazingly, not many are asking for refunds. Some are still donating and registering despite the cancellation. But we will refund anyone who wants their money back. We realize it is hard for everyone. Many are taking our offer to get Love Ride 26 souvenir merchandise in lieu of their donation. Also the love ride web site will always be open to anyone who wishes to make a tax de- ductible donation. 16) I’m sure the preparation for an event of this magnitude is enormous. Was it difficult to get out of contracts with the city, Fairplex etc. Yes indeed. More than I ever imagined. I am still in the midst of unwinding this. Many deposits will have to be forfeited, as we are still negotiating with everyone we had an obligation to. 17) How much pre ordered merchandise were you left with this year and how can people buy some of it? We ordered a lot less than normal in anticipa- tion of the smaller turn out. It is still substantial. They are available on our web site <a href="http://www.loveride.org">www.loveride.org</a> or <a href="http://www.loveride.com">www.loveride.com. </a>We hope we can recover all or some of our investment. 18) How much money will you lose now that the event has been cancelled and how much money would you have lost had you put the event on this year? This would be just a guess because there is no real way of knowing what the event would have made this year for the kids. No way to know for sure yet. We are still tally- ing up the numbers. We are expecting our losses will still be in tens of thousands, but with the event on, we would have potentially lost hun- dreds of thousands. 19) What did Harley-Davidson corporate think of the cancellation? Disappointed, but fully understanding and supportive. (Steve Fisher, Marketing Director for Glendale Harley-Davidson, added “ They’re sad. The whole Davidson family has been a fixture at the Love Ride for many years. Each Love Ride was like a family reunion.”) 20) The last question is the most important in my opinion. Can we expect a Love Ride next year? How about CA Bike Week? I would like to think of this as an hiatus for both events. We will have to see how the num- bers stack up. We should all stand proud of the 25 year run we had and hope it will return in some form or other. I still have a lot fight left in me! Steve Fisher added, “Not a day goes by at the dealership where I don’t get an email or a phone call with a suggestion for the event where they refer to the Love Ride as “we or “our”. It’s a very special event and people claim ownership to it. They feel vested, and they should. It’s been theirs for 25 years. The day of each Love Ride is always very special, it’s hard for me to even put into words. That’s what’s great about it. Twisting the throttle, heading onto the on-ramp with thou- sands of other bikers, the roar is insane, you’ll never feel anything like it. There are many charity rides, but only one Love Ride.” Lisa: Thank you so much. I asked a lot of uncomfortable questions in the hopes of satisfying our readers and you were more than forthcoming. We didn’t have room to print it, but the spreadsheet you gave us showing all the dollars generated and charities helped was truly impressive. (See spreadsheet on <a href="http://www.quickthrottle.com">www.quickthrottle.com) </a>Showing the progression through the years solidifies just how monumental these last 25 years have been. I think you’ll find that people will appreciate the truth since so many riders are so emotionally in- vested in The Love Ride. I think we’ll enjoy many more years if it comes back in 2010. If not, we will always remember how The Love Ride and Oliver Shokouh helped change the biker image and that, my friend, is something to be proud of. Thank you for your constant sincerity, Lisa Editor’s note – as we went to press, a woman was calling Glendale H-D, wishing to donate her hus- band’s motorcycle to the Love Ride Foundation. Her husband Bob passed away this year but has done most of the past 25 Love Rides. The bike Bob & Patty Vincent donated was a 2000 Softail model – worth $10,000.
7page

8page

9page

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED Caveats: FOUO I am serving over in Afghanistan once again (after two tours in Iraq as well) but I am from Fullerton and love getting your mags from folks at home. These incredible CVO’s are manufactured in limited numbers at a premium price, and we get to ride them. Decked out with amazing paint, a powerful Screamin Eagle Twin Cam 110 and adorned with every shiny bell and whistle available from H-D this year, the 2010 Street Glide is an absolute CVO stunner. The rich maroon Rum paint set against a Gold Leaf eagle with an elegantly sweeping golden arc graces this Street Glide. The extended saddlebags, sculpted cutaways for the large ex- haust pipes and flush mounted teardrop tail lights allow the eye to enjoy the stylish design without a sin- gle interruption of contrasting paint or pin stripe. The rear end of this CVO screams custom class but it’s what’s underneath the voluptuous veneer that will ultimately corrupt. You’ve heard the saying Absolute Power, Corrupts Absolutely and those that know CVO, look upon with envy, those that don’t look upon with won- der because somehow, instinctively they know this is not just another Harley-Davidson. Hammering the throttle launches this Street Glide onto the super slab with the G force of a dragster. My God man, I am at 100mph in a blink of an eye, and it’s a rush. The Screamin Eagle twin cam 110 with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel In- jection (ESPFI) claims 115 ft lbs of torque at 3750 rpm. One might ex- pect this kind of acceleration on a V- Rod but an 848 lb Bagger?... I like this absolute power, and the corruption begins. This bike inspires a command- ing sense of authority and confidence. Twist the throttle, knock through the gears and nothing remains in the rear view mirror for very long. Once you have this power, you use this power. Riding to Palm Desert I played tag with a cutie in a Porsche Carerra and we bounced around triple digits for miles. Not that I condone such behavior but it’s good to know the thrust is there when you need it. Hwy 38 to Big Bear provided some grades and altitude, but alas, this CVO hardly noticed, at- tacking the terrain without a whimper. While downing a cold Monster in Big Bear City, old friend “Mike The Greek” rolled up on his Electra. Both heading back down the mountain, he sug- gested we trade rides. What Mike wants, Mike gets but alas I now feel sorry for him…his Electra just doesn’t have that gleam anymore. I couldn’t get off this bike…from L.A, Palm Desert to Big Bear Lake. The PCH from Santa Barbara to San Diego this is the bike to see and to be seen on. It’s a joy to ride and wants to be ridden and what’s more I always arrived at my destination sooner than I wanted to. Rubber pads on the engine guards allow for a comfortable alternate leg position. A respectable 32-degree right, 30-degree left lean angle cou- pled with Harley’s new chassis makes this Street Glides maneuverability and stability exemplary. Harleys new motor-mount system minimizes en- gine shake at idle. Add a high per- formance clutch with hydraulic action, lowered rear suspension, 7-spoke con- trast chrome agitator wheels and 24 top of the line chrome parts and you’ve just scraped the CVO surface. Brembo four piston caliper ABS brakes afford the best stopping power on earth. The Harmon Kardon AM/FM/CD/MP3/WB with a security system rocks even at high speed. With the CVO indoor cover and gold Harley- Davidson ignition key with display box, you make a statement.
11page

9 I wouldn’t be doing my job without some journalistic criticism. The low tinted windshield looks really cool but is really not effective at 80 miles an hour and there is cockpit buffet- ing. Fuel economy is listed between 32 to 47 mpg. As stated on the H-D website, (mileage may vary depending on personal riding habits) and I sur- mise my bad habit of launching this powerful TC 110 has it suckin’ gas like a Dyson, but hey, with a $30,999 price tag, the price of 91 Octane probably isn’t a big concern anyway and a 6-gallon tank is a plus. Ulti- mately, this is a truly spirited, esthet- ically refined Harley-Davidson motorcycle anyone would love to own, and if your one of the select 3500 who do… we all envy your cor- ruption absolutely! Special Thanks to Westminster Harley-Davidson for the loan of a pas- senger back rest and to Surf City Harley-Davidson on Main Street in Huntington Beach for the Harley- Davidson motor clothes. Just like old times. I suggest you ride your motorcycle there during their annual celebration of fast metal, hard rock, tattoos and attitude. Street Vibrations is a party you don’t want to miss. This year, they served it up from September 23rd ( Wednesday) through September 27th (Sunday). It seems to me it gets better every year, and this year was no exception. I rode up from the San Fran- cisco Bay Area. Jump on Interstate 80, get off at Virginia Street and you are there. That’s 200 miles of flat out GO. Take some sun block cause that’s high dessert and this year, with the temps nearing 100, it wasn’t an option.. The problem you’re going to have with Street Vibrations (once you get your sun block on) is trying to decide what to do, what to see, what to hear and where to ride. Not that you have to ride anywhere. Downtown is blocked off at Virginia Street from Sec- ond to Sixth. The majority of the down town streets are taken over by hundreds of vendors hawking the usual (leather, leather, helmets, leather, sunglasses etc.) and the not so usual, but you better get used to it (trike conversions). If you needed parts for your motorcycle, J&P Cycle was there as was Performance Machine and dozens of others. There was plenty of food offerings as well. ( Try the Gyros and baklava), from barbeque to Chinese rice bowls. The downtown Events Center is packed with tattoo artists, more vendors (more food) and custom and production motorcycles. Big Bear Choppers claims its space at the Events Center, peacefully coexisting with Big Dog Motorcycles, separated by the cus- tom bike competition (which I will be discussing later). Big Bear was ably represented by Michael Forbes (Dealer Development). Since I de- manded a scoop for this article, he let spill that new for 2010, a barebones (and afford- able) chopper is on its way, available only in black (as it should be), with an EPA approved S&S 100 Cubic Inch engine. A nice clean entry level chopper that should have wide appeal. Big Bear will also be offering, starting in 2010, a 5 year, unlimited miles warrantee on all their bikes. Now, that’s quite a statement in regards to reliability. Big Dog displayed all their models including the always impressive K-9. The perfect 8 up head turner. They claim the K-9 as America’s number one chopper, and I see no reason to dispute that. With a 117 cubic inch S&S power plant this carbureted behe- moth is all attitude with the puppies to back it up. Not on the program, but nonetheless a “don’t miss it” stop on your agenda is David- son’s Distillery on the corner of East Forth Street. Sitting next to Shoeman’s Custom Motorcycle Shop, and below the American Ink Tattoo Parlor, some say its Reno’s only true biker bar. The parking lot is a scene during all 5 days of the event and it’s where I ran into Gramps, the National Liaison of the Sisters of Scota Women’s Motorcycle Club. Her and her buds were wearing their fuchsia and silver colors to signify their family bond. Their motto, “Deal with it”. Inside the bar, there was live music every night, supplied by The Boogie Days, Train Wreck and the Rick Hammond Blues Band on Saturday. 13
16page

Saturday night, the winners of the custom bike competition were announced. I was impressed by the winner in the Best American Bike class. Dan Kenzy, the builder, proudly claimed his first place trophy. What added some cool to this show, as it turned out, was that in the end there were more first place trophies than there were competitors, so every entrant received a first place in categories made up by the Emcee as he went. For my money, all these outrageous metal sculptures deserved it. Sinister Industries out of Phoenix displayed some of the hottest airbrushed paint jobs you could imagine on their custom baggers and across the aisle, Carl Brouhard Designs had built a bike for Promise Keepers, a nine and a half foot custom monster that was being raffled off for $10.00 a ticket. Without leaving the Events Center, you could grab yourself some ink from the row of 20 skilled tattoo artists set up inside. Distinctive Ink was up from Pico Rivera, CA. Cherry Blossom Tattoos was celebrating its 6th year at the event. All the downtown hotels got into the spirit. As usual, the Sands offered 24 hour, patrolled free parking for bikes and set up an outdoor stage for country rock and hard rock groups. Brand new Harleys were displayed inside many of the casinos and for the right spin on the right slot machine, you’d be riding one home. While we’re on hotels, let me talk about the one I stayed at. The Reno Ra- mada worried me a little when I booked it. There were rooms still available a week before the event ( just about everywhere else was sold out), plus, the price wasn’t outrageous, so I was wondering what everyone else knew that I didn’t. Turns out, I still don’t know. The experience was pleasant from beginning to end. My room, on the 10th floor gave me a great view of the down town, and it’s where I watched the Friday Night fireworks ( Which didn’t start until almost 10:00 PM) . It was clean, comfy and quiet. The whole place was recently remodeled, the food at the restaurant was fine, breakfast was free, they threw in a drink at the bar and a pack of cards. It was six or so blocks from downtown and there’s a good chance I’ll stay there next year as well. And NO, this writer received no financial consideration for this endorsement! The Jagermeister Super Stage was set up in the Eldorado Special Events Plaza. The Savannah Blue Band sizzled with hard Southern Rock, followed on Friday by Zepparella. Can you imagine Janis Joplin fronting Led Zeppelin? That’s about what Zepparella sounds like. To say they rocked the house, is a gross understate- ment. If you have an opportunity to hear these gals, take it. Also, Friday, there was a choice between Steppenwolf at the Silver Legacy and Bret Michaels at the Peppermill. (Maybe you’re getting the idea of why Street Vi- bration is now the 6th largest Bike event in the country). Friday is also the night they choose for the awesome fireworks show which lit up the downtown until 10:00 PM. Five miles up Second Street, in the parking lot of the Grand Sierra Resort, late in the afternoon on Saturday, Ryan Capes successfully broke the world record for the motorcycle long jump of 254 feet, twice. He made it look easy as he went through the air 287 feet, and then, realizing he promised a 300 foot jump, he went back and did it again, this time 300 feet from ramp to ramp. The traffic slowed on nearby highway 395 as folks strained for a look. Virginia City is a 24 mile ride through the dessert hills from Reno and has a char- acter all its own. More like a mardi gras for Harleys, Virginia City is about 8 blocks long. Founded in the 1850’s it looks much like it did over 100 years ago complete with what could be the original wooden plank sidewalks. Those sidewalks were packed with revelers as the visiting bikers became the show as they rumbled down the main drag. For a string of beads, many a fine breast (and a few butt cheeks) was bared both on the street and on the steel as they rolled by. The town was filled way past capacity as a line of bikes poured in throughout the day. After a couple of hours I was ready to head back to Reno, and happened right by Reno Harley-Davidson. They had a party going on all their own, with music, food and demo rides. The grounds were packed with bikes. Carson Harley- Davidson hosts a similar event every year and also draws huge crowds. You can’t just hang in town with the great scenic rides to these outlying areas. Sunday the activities regretfully wind down. For those lucky folks who don’t have to be back at work on Monday, the vendors remain open till about 3:00, but if you want to avoid some traffic nightmares get on the road before 11:00 and you should be fine. For those headed West, don’t forget, you can’t (legally) split lanes till you get back to California, and be careful on your ride back - the CHP knows the event is over, and Highway 80 is well patrolled.
17page

18page

19page

Who invented Ape hang- ers and why? I went to The House of Handlebars in Long Beach to find out. Open since 1969, they oughta know. Talk- ing with Marshall (one of the owners) Russ and Steve they said what everyone says, they’ve heard the stories but know body really knows. THE STORIES: 1. WWII army motorcyclists would use “hi-rise” handlebars to protect themselves from the wires which were strung across the road by the enemy to maim and kill them. Note: That’s why the colour green was “unlucky”, couriers were regularly killed on drab green U.S Army mo- torcycles. 2. GI’s returning from WWII bought surplus military HD’s and chopped off all the extra parts and somebody figured they could re-bend the crash bars and make a cool looking set of handle- bars. They were called hooks at the time. 3. Fashionable in the 50’s apes faded away until the movie Easy Rider (1969). Peter Fonda and Sonny Barger were friends and the Hells Angels liked the look. The Captain America chopper re- vived the ape hanger in the 70’s. The Truth: Your guess is as good as mine. In the 60’s you would get an instant ticket for apes so han- dlebars on choppers were mostly drag style. Plus, smaller drag bars allowed you to get the bike into hotel rooms an night while travelling. Their are all sorts of handlebar options, Buckhorns, Z- bars, D- bar, Y-bar, Beachbars, Flybars, Dragbars. Steve has seen apes becoming more popular again just re- cently. The Riders: Steve and Russ felt that 90% of Harley riders change their handlebars, it’s ei- ther for comfort or the look. Steve was putting on a set of apes on a Dyna. The entire head- light assembly was removed to get to the wire loom, the gas tank comes off to pull the loom out. Pull the tranny cover to change the clutch cable. The rear wheel had to come off to pull the wire loom back through and the pipes had to come off the pull the wheel. It’s not a piece if cake. House of handlebars can usually put on a set for 500 bucks plus parts. The Quest: You can actually get the feel of a set of handlebars before you buy. House of Handlebars has a cool HD Softail handlebar stimulator that you can easily interchange any style of handlebar. The Laws: Assembly Bill AB2844 effective 1/1/2005 California Handlebar Height - A person shall not drive a two-wheel motorcycle that is equipped with handlebars so positioned that the hands of the driver, when upon the grips, are more than six inches above his or her shoulder height when sit- ting astride the seat: The buzz in California is that fe- male troopers will need to be on scene during future stops for handlebar height violations since some male troopers suffer a distorted view of how big six inches really is. The Journey: Quite monkeying around, let’s ride. My friend Justin has a killer 2009 Road King with 18” apes and let me take her for a spin. 20 inch apes are the tallest you can commercially purchase. I like the chopper stance, sitting low and usually my arms are almost shoulder high. Sitting on his Road King my arms were only slightly elevated past my shoulders, very comfortable. We are the same height and all the controls were in the right place. I ran around L.B. and PCH for a while. The first thing I noticed that the physical coupling of bars to bike was much looser. Harley handlebars use rubber mounts to secure and isolate vibration. Most Harley handlebars flex but these flexed more. Turning ra- dius was fine and control into and out of turns was surprisingly manageable. Tight U turns were an- other matter for me. Because of the bars design my elbow pressed into my side while my other arm was reaching for the stars. Freeway cruising is a breeze, a very strong breeze. His bike had freeway pegs attached to the crash bars, I felt like our friend Apehangerus Erectus, spread eagle catching as much wind as possible. Overall control lane changing and passing was good. Back on city streets I’m getting the feel of this and I like it. I clocked a good dip that put my ass in the air and on the way down I took the handlebars with me. The bars were now a good 6 inches lower.….this can’t be good.…. I pulled over to asses the situation. Are these not appropriately torqued down? Did I just bust something on Justin’s new Road King? While pondering the situation I just pushed the bars back up. Ok, let’s get back. Turns out ALL ape hangers can act this way. The physics of leverage and torque that can be used to secure the handlebar clamp will never keep a tall set of apes locked. The bigger the handle bar tube diameter the less secure. Steve said that in time the bolts actually stretch and that causes the clamp to loosen. If riders get used to grabbing the apes on the lower vertical bar to muscle the bike in and out of difficult situations the bars will stay more stable. I am used to jerking my bikes around forcefully by their bars. Just aint so with apes. After talking with dozens of bikers they all said the same thing … you get used to it. Some actually drill and boly through the bars, some use generous portions of Loctite. I have allot more respect for riders with apes. It’s not that bike is hard to handle it’s that it needs to be handled gently. Note: Justin’s 09 Road King has the Fly by Wire, elec- tronic throttle that’s in the handlebars. Make sure your installer is familiar with these because it a to- tally different animal. He’s got over 2 grand into his Carlini bars and installation done at Settle Cycle in Harbor City. Final Thoughts: Handlebars are as personal as the clothes you wear. Some of us like allot of style, some like allot of comfort and some of us still have mullets and bellbottoms and that’s cool too. Check out some- one else’s ride or test out some handlebars before you commit, it’s an investment in time and money evolving from Harlystocterus to Apehangerus Erec- tus in something you’ll be spending allot of time with. Ride Safe. Special Thanks to Justin for trusting me with his Road King and Summer, his pretty girlfriend. <a href="http://www.houseofhandlebars.com">http://www.houseofhandlebars.com</a> 562-997-0029 Check out their new location @ 3990 Cherry Ave Long Beach, CA 90807 Apehangerus Erectus Contemplating the evolution of Man to Ape 17
20page

BY RUSTY CHILDRESS PICS BY RUSTY CHILDRESS & ART HALL On October 1-4 over 30,000 bikers enjoyed the 9th Annual Las Vegas BikeFest, the 6th annual Artistry in Iron Master Builders Cham- pionship, plus the Biggest Tattoo Show on Earth, and it all happened in Vegas, baby! It’s no secret that Sin City is a playground for adults, but it is also an uninhibited hog heaven for riders. Motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the country stayed entertained in this neon-galore desert oasis with the stan- dard Vegas fare of gambling, sun worshiping, nightclubs, fine dining, production shows, shopping, wedding chapels, and concerts but they also got a chance to immerse them- selves in everything biker. At the rally’s epicenter, If you didn’t find what you were looking for in the 210 booths in the Cashman Center Vendor Village, there were daily concerts under the big tent, biker build- offs, demo rides and eye-popping beauty contests. Ride Now Powersports Kristina Falco from Las Vegas won the title of Mrs. Bikefest and the $1000 grand prize, after facing some pretty tough competition. She then went on to win a bikini contest that same night at the Golden Nugget. Perhaps it was the dia- mond-studded heart-shaped navel jewelry that brought this lady luck. But if that wasn’ t enough sex in the city for you, the hormones were raging at Michelle Dell’s Hogs & Heifers Saloon. With six all- 18
21page

woman bartenders who alternated dancing on the bar top with up to fifteen nearly-nasty patrons, the place really lived up to it’s reputa- tion. So much so that the sometimes pantyless SoCal Lifestyle Bikers swinger club (lifestylebikers.com) got swept away in the moment in front of the Saloon with some real girl on girl action. This biker club accepts couples and single women as members, and you don’t even have to own a bike to start swinging, you just have to love “riding.” Hmmm. With perfect chamber of commerce short sleeve weather, it made for 24-hours a day non-stop fun. Events held outdoors like the bike shows, multiple dealer open houses, 2010 Harley-Davidson demo rides and the $100,000 poker run insured the need to lather up with sunscreen. One such outdoor event could be found at the Las Vegas Harley- Davidson which held an open house that included demo rides and a wet t-shirt contest with $1000 to the winner. Besides being one of the poker run stops, the dealership hosted live bands, vendors, and had plenty of cold beer. Many riders even took advantage of some of the scenic roadways in the area. From Red Rock Canyon to The Valley of Fire, Lake Mead and Hoover Dam, to cruising down the world famous Las Vegas Strip, there was a lot of great byways to explore. Yet some were content to be entertained at the Cashman Center with events like the Worlds Strongest Biker Competition. During this strenuous competition bik- ers carried kegs, tires, and towed a red custom Boss Hog trike to prove their manliness to cheering onlookers. The Cashman Center was also the scene of BikeFest’s Custom bike show. This event had an excellent turnout with builders competing for a $3000 top prize. One stunning crowd pleaser build by Divas Bling was a Swarovski crystallized Harley-Davidson worth $50,000. This 2009 Sportster Nightster drew a crowd all day long because you could see it sparkling from nearly a block away. Also featured at the center the Artistry in Iron, Master Builders’ Cham- pionship was an invitation-only, peer judged competition between 20 of the industry’s most innovative and progressive custom bike builders. This year’s championship featured some notable master bike builders, including Michael Barragan, Gard Hollinger, Kris Krome and Bryan Fuller, in a head-to-head battle as they unveiled their newest designs. With the full moon looming large overhead, Vegas came alive at night, making it seem like anything was possible. As the new official headquarter hotel, the Sahara Hotel and Casino did their part by fea- turing night time performances by the legendary Molly Hatchet with special guests Blue Storm, and by hosting BikeFest after parties and BBQ’s. Just down the strip from the Sahara, the Mandalay Bay hosted the world’s premier tattoo convention that showcased the latest trends, fashions and techniques in the tattoo industry. With over 1000 artists and close to 100,000 visitors, this show was a colorful addition for an already busy weekend full of events. Not to be outdone, The Harley-Davidson Cafe with a giant landmark replica Sportster busting through the front facade, hosted a series of Hog Out Competitions to see who could eat the most BBQ sliders in three minutes. One night in front of the Cafe, “JT” held court with his 2007 Street Glide which featured a $3000 music system. The crowd danced to JT’s hip hop I-pod compilations by the light of the Bellagio fountains from across the street until o’dark-thirty. The bike rally is about having fun, and Las Vegas is a natural for that. Considering that Harley-Davidson has been running an advertising campaign with the tag line “Screw it. Let’s Ride”, BikeFest patrons had a similar outlook this year with regard to the economy. Bikers proved that they were done with it and came revved up to party. So now is the time to mark your 2010 calendar for September 30 through Oc- tober 3, the Tenth Annual should be legendary. Don’t miss it. (Oct. 15, 2009) – Buell Motorcycle Company and Harley-Davidson, Inc. announced today that it will discontinue the Buell® product line as part of Harley-Davidson’s go-forward business strategy. The new long-term strategy aims to drive Company growth through a focus of efforts and resources on the Harley- Davidson® brand. In a further move to reduce operating costs, the Company is also placing legendary Varese, Italy, sports bike manufacturer MV Agusta up for sale, following the July 2008 confirmation that it had turned to MV Agusta as a purchase target (for $109m) following the failure of its efforts to buy Ducati. “I want to personally thank all our past and present Buell employees, dealers and suppliers for their ef- forts. I also want to thank Buell motorcycle own- ers for their support and passion for the brand,” said Buell Motorcycle Company President Jon Flickinger. Flickinger said a limited number of new Buell mo- torcycles remain available for sale through author- ized dealerships and production will wind down by October 30. He also stressed that Harley-Davidson will provide replacement parts and service through dealerships and that warranty coverage will con- tinue as normal for Buell motorcycles. Operations at Buell's main production facility in East Troy, Wisconsin, have been halted, and that plant will close for good on December 18th. Erik Buell is in on-going discussions about whether or not he will remain with Harley-Davidson in a prod- uct development capacity, but no decisions have been made. A Harley-Davidson spokesperson stated that selling Buell is not an option. The Buell product line is too closely integrated with Harley- Davidson's operations and dealership network to separate and sell to an outside interest. “I will always be proud of what we have accom- plished. It is a testimony to what a small group of passionate and inspired people can do, and with brilliant innovations, we’ve produced some of the best-handling bikes of all time,” said Buell Chairman and Chief Technical Officer Erik Buell. “I personally look forward to exploring how I can continue to work with Harley-Davidson to bring advanced product technology to riders. “I have also had the great fortune to meet and get to know many Buell riders over the years, and they are an amazing and interesting group of free thinkers,” Buell said. “May you ride with pride into the future. And may your roads ahead be as adven- turesome and rewarding as mine have been for the last 26 years.” A wholly owned subsidiary of Harley-Davidson, Inc. since 1998, Buell Motorcycle Company was founded in 1983 by Erik Buell and produced more than 135,000 motorcycles. Over the past 26 years, Buell motorcycles won numerous design accolades and awards, and countless races and championships around the world, including the AMA Pro Daytona SportBike championship in 2009. For more information and to view a video message from Erik Buell, go<a href="http://www.buell.com"> to www.buell.com</a> To read the Harley-Davidson, Inc. 3rd quarter earn- ings announcement, including information related to Buell, go<a href="http://www.harley-davidson.com"> to www.harley-davidson.com</a> Harley-Davidson's third quarter results were predictably disappointing by their own historical standards, with retail mo- torcycle sales down 21.3 percent, though compared to the 30.1 percent decline endured in the second quarter of this year, CEO Wandell said he was "mildly encouraged" by the performance. The company says it shipped 54,236 motorcycles during the quarter, which was within guidance, and that for the nine months to date shipments were 187,085, compared to 226,898 motorcycles shipped in the first nine months of 2008. However, Harley-Davidson's retail sales have actu- ally bucked the market trend; both for the latest quarter and for the year as a whole so far. Sales were 24.3 percent down within the United States, and 13.1 percent down internationally, but that is in the context of a domestic US heavyweight (651+cc) market that is said to have plummeted 35.9 percent during the quarter. For the nine month year-to-date, Harley says its re- tail sales are 22.9 percent down worldwide (25.5 percent domestically, 16.5 percent internationally) but Harley has in fact been consistently out-per- forming the market in America throughout the year to date, and is gaining market share elsewhere. In the United States, the domestic US heavyweight market is down a whopping 38.7 percent for the first nine months compared to 2008. Oct. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Harley-David- son Inc., the biggest U.S. motorcycle maker, will start talks in coming weeks with union workers in York, Pennsylvania, to decide the fate of the company’s largest U.S. manu- facturing facility. Harley has a plan that may keep the plant open with the union local acceptance of work-rule changes, said Pat Sweeney, a spokeswoman. The Mil- waukee-based motorcycle maker is still pursuing a second option to relocate production to Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee. “We have said from the beginning that our clear preference is to remain in York but only if the com- pany can achieve fundamental change there by changing the labor agreement,” Sweeney said. The decision will be one of the first major actions taken by Chief Executive Officer Keith Wandell, who took over the post in April. The company is trying to cut costs after posting eight straight de- clines in quarterly earnings as motorcycle sales shrank in the recession. Local 175 of the International Association of Ma- chinists and Aerospace Workers represents hourly employees at the Pennsylvania plant. The union did- n’t return calls for comment. The plant had 2,400 employees as of May 13. Harley rose 47 cents, or 2 percent, to $23.75 at 4:00 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Shares have risen 40 percent this year. The York Daily Record reported on the talks yes- terday. FEDS TO STUDY RISE IN MOTORCYCLE DEATHS Washington -- The Federal Highway Adminis- tration will conduct an intensive study into the cause of the growing number of motorcycle crashes and deaths on America's roads. It's the first study of its kind in almost 30 years. Nearly 5,300 motorcycle riders died in roadway crashes in 2008, representing 14 percent of all deaths, and 96,000 were injured. Between 1997 and 2008, motorcycle fatalities jumped from 2,116 to 5,290 -- a 150 percent in- crease, according to the Transportation Depart- ment's Fatality Analysis Reporting System. In 2008 alone, deaths from motorcycle crashes rose by 2.2 percent while all other vehicle classes saw reductions in fatalities. The problem isn't just because of more bikes on the roads. The motorcycle fatality rate has nearly doubled from 21 per million miles traveled in 1997 to 39 in 2007. The study was required by a 2005 federal law, the "Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act," and will be conducted along with the Oklahoma State University. Researchers will evaluate data from hundreds of motorcycle crashes to help identify common fac- tors, including road configurations, environmental conditions and rider experience. The study's focus is on countermeasures that could reduce motorcycle crashes or lessen their harm. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conducted a pilot study to develop the protocols for the full-scale causation research. NHTSA con- ducted the last major motorcycle causation study, which was completed in 1981. The NHTSA plans to decide by next year whether to require anti-lock brakes on motorcycles, spokesman Rae Tyson said. An Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study showed that the rate of fatal crashes was 28 per- cent lower for motorcycles equipped with optional anti-lock brakes than for those same motorcycles without them. 21
24page

25page

BY ROBERT SWEENEY PHOTOS BY MONIKA SWEENEY Las Vegas BikeFest 2009 was something of an anti-climax for us here in NV. Normally, one doesn’t have to go near the main LVBF activity centers at Fremont Street and the Cashman Center to know that a major biker event is tak- ing place; the entire city is flooded with motor- cycles. But driving around Las Vegas on Friday and Saturday afternoons we saw little more bike traffic than you’d expect on most any weekend blessed with sunshine and mild tem- peratures. Maybe it was different around Fre- mont and Cashman ( Was there even anything happening on Fremont St. this year? The only mention of it in the LVBF schedule of events was the shuttle to Vendor Village), but the aver- age civilian would never have guessed that anything out of the ordinary was going on in town. Why, shoot… I’ve seen more bikes run- ning around Vegas during the Laughlin River Run and Laughlin is 100 miles away! Things seemed to be jumpin’ pretty good at Las Vegas Harley-Davidson when Monika and I drove by on Friday. The parking lot was jammed with vendors and the H-D demo truck was there. Live music and a poker run were bringing in the crowds, but then, LVHD always draws a good crowd when they host a run or open house. Red Rock H-D and Henderson H- D had their own things going on as well. Over on Boulder Hwy, at Arlen Ness Motorcycles of Las Vegas we couldn’t even find parking space within walking distance on Friday (admittedly, nei- ther of us are up to hiking very far, due to bad knees and hips, but still, it was crowded). We went back on Saturday morning and found things a bit less jammed. The folks at Arlen Ness were also hosting an open house from Thursday through Saturday that included food, vendors and a bikini bike wash. Gen- eral Manager Bill Biler himself was handing out coupons good for a free hot dog and beer and we chowed down and hung out for awhile, schmoozing with the staff and other riders. Along about 3PM we headed over to Highland Ave where Count’s Kustoms was holding their annual Motor Psycho Open House. The Count puts on a free concert (always headlined by his good buddy Vince Neil), raffles off a custom bike and offers food and adult beverages for a complete party package. “Count” Danny Koker is a gracious host and always mingles freely with the crowd. We stayed through the opening set, performed by Johnny Cash tribute band, “Cash’d Out”. Even though the lead singer looks like he could be the son of Rodney Danger- field, he sure does sound like Johnny Cash and he and the band put on a great show. But even a free concert wasn’t bringing in the crowds we would have anticipated. We left just after 5PM to attend to other commitments, so maybe things picked up a bit after dark, but the whole weekend was feeling just a tad subdued to us. Subdued seems to be the operative word here. Those I’ve spoken with have all expressed the same impression of BikeFest 2009: less traffic; fewer ven- dors; fun, but not very exciting. Although Scott at RSC Cycle, a local independent Harley shop, said he did turn a profit and will do LVBF again next year. 23
26page

27page

28page

29page

VICTORVILLE, CA* 3RD ANNUAL RALLY IN THE ALLEY TOY RUN – Toy run to benefit families in the High Desert. When we first headed out in the morning the weather was questionable. It was rather cloudy with a chance of rain. However, we were lucky enough to see mostly sunny skies later in the af- ternoon! The starting location was hosted by Renegade Classics in Phoenix. People began to arrive just after eight o’clock in the morning to a treat of coffee and donuts. Special thanks to Robyn from Dunkin Donuts at 32nd and Cactus Rd for helping out with this event. We rolled out right at ten o’clock and headed up to Harold’s Corral via Cave Creek Rd for the first stop. We picked up a few extra riders while at Harold’s. The second stop on the agenda was Billet Bar in Scottsdale and then down to Toby Keith’s “I Love this Bar & Grill” in Mesa. This was where we had our end-ride festivities. They had great food and drink specials waiting for us as well as a lot of raffle prizes donated by several local businesses. I was actually lucky enough to win a beautiful embroidered Harley-Davidson denim jacket donated by Christine, the rides or- ganizer! When I first met Christine it was easy to see her passion for raising awareness about ALS and her desire to help find a cure. I was honored to be asked to play a role in this ride. The ride was held in honor of her co-worker and good friend Claudine Brady. Claudine was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease in January of 2009. ALS is a disease of the motor neurons, muscle-control- ling nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. Early symptoms of ALS often include increasing mus- cle weakness, especially involving the arms and legs, speech, swallowing or breathing. Al- though each individual may display different symptoms early on, Claudine’s first indication that something wasn’t right was when she choked on a cookie for no apparent reason. When muscles no longer receive the messages from the motor neurons that they require to function, the muscles begin to atrophy (be- come smaller). The cause is not yet known, how- ever genetic factors are thought to play a role. About 10 percent of cases are clearly genetic with a family history. Approximately 5,600 peo- ple in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year. Although the average survival time with ALS is three to five years, many people live five, ten or more years with this disease. At this time, there is no known cure for this disease; however, there are now cases where the progression is being slowed. With people out there like Christine, doing everything she can to help raise funds for re- search, maybe they will be able to find a cure in the near future! If you would like more informa- tion on ALS or would like to help in some way, please go to<a href="http://www.alsaz.org"> www.alsaz.org.</a> Every little bit counts! Thanks to all who participated in this year’s event, we were able to present The ALS Arizona Chapter some much-needed funds. This was a great way to spend the day socializing, riding, and especially, helping to make a difference. We hope to see even more of you involved in next year’s ride! 29
32page

30
33page

Stor y by Randy Twells, Photos by RT, Diane Norton, Carol Graham, Todd Canavan, & Contributed. A well-kept secret? Undiscovered treasure? Until I received the in- vitation from Diane Norton at the Idaho Division of Tourism Develop- ment, I like perhaps many of you, did not know of the International Selkirk Loop. One of the Top Ten Scenic Drives in the US, it’s in a re- mote, uncrowded region perfect for exploring, winding around the Selkirk Mountain Range, covering a route through Washington state, Idaho and British Columbia. Our group was an international one, of 12 motorcycling women, riders and writers— from the US, Holland and Ger- many; our fearless leader Diane Norton, and H-D’s Product Marketing Manager Jen Gruber, heading up the trip. We would ride an assortment of 2010 Harley-Davidson Motor- cycles supplied by the Motor Co., accompanied by our new Best Friend, Fleet Tech Todd Canavan in his chase fleet truck, and Int’l Selkirk Loop Director Carol Graham in her chase van. I was curious about where the name ‘Selkirk’ is from; it’s in honor of Scotland’s Thomas Douglas, 18th century 5th Earl of Selkirk, a Scottish philanthropist who sponsored immi- grant settlements in Canada & the US. We would ride through seemingly endless forest wilderness, some of its trees probably sprouting when those settlements were es- tablished, past lakes and rivers under sky that told a whole new story every day, with moods to match. CRUISING THE LOOP and SUPER SIDE TRIPS—-The main Loop route is right around the base of the Selkirks, the 6 Super Side Trips taking you on smaller side-trip loops that depart the main route and then rejoin it farther up the road. If you elect to stop short of the Cana- dian border, you can still do the Loop in part; by doing the Side Trips you still see new areas almost the whole way, and you end up back at your starting point. Along with detailed helpful maps and guides, there are plenty of signs pointing the way. The test is: I could find my way through here, and I can’t find my way out of a paper bag, so, you know you’ll be just fine…. We did four of the six mapped Super Side Trips on our tour. You can see & do all the following on the route WE took: Movie filming locations, massive waterfalls and rapids, artisan workshops with movie credentials, a forest footbridge over a freight train, take a ferry across a huge lake, deer and bears among the trees near the road, huge eagle and osprey nests, a glass house, an 1800’s city hall still in use as such, and tour an 1800’s sternwheeler. And over 700 miles of almost empty road. *** Day 1, late afternoon: We started at Spokane, considered the gate- way to the inland northwest and the International Selkirk Loop. Our first night’s stay would be at the historic Davenport Hotel. Our bikes were waiting in the parking garage, all shiny and eager! We all converged at the lobby fountain, meeting Pam from Spokane Convention & Visitors Bureau which sponsored our visit, and fearless leader Diane. Diane was ready to lead this group on the 2010 Dyna Fat Bob, a step up in weight from her Sporty. She acclimated for 2 weeks in preparation—on a borrowed Dyna (courtesy of High Desert H-D in Meridian, ID), and said she was glad she did. My ride would be a 2010 Softail Custom. The other women riders had selected a VRSC V-Rod Muscle, a Street Glide, 2 Sportster 1200’s- 1 Low & 1 Cus- tom, an XR1200 Sportster that looked flat track ready, 2 Fat Boy’s, a Fat Boy Lo, a Dyna Super Glide Custom, and a Dyna Wide Glide. 31
34page

While our bikes champed at the bit in the garage overnight, we would see a bit of Spokane, starting at the Davenport. Built in 1914, it reflects the splen- dor of a European royal palace with influences of England, Spain, Italy, France and Russia. Founder Louis Davenport built a monument full of symbol- ism, including the lobby fireplace that burns 24/7. Davenport was also innovative with firsts: a central vacuum system, air conditioning, the gourmet dish ‘Crab Louis’, and more. Achieving National Historic Place status in 1975, the Davenport later escaped demolition, and was restored and re-opened in 2002 in all its original glory. Each room is total luxury with marble everywhere and your bathrobe in the closet. Take the Self-Guided Walking Tour to step into his- tory. Presidents, royals, dignitaries and movie stars/ celebrities have visited here. Motorcycle parking and pets can stay too, for all you riders with a canine passenger! From the Davenport we walked to nearby Riverfront Park next to the Spokane River, riding the vintage Loof Carousel, and SkyRide aerial tram over the Spokane River & Falls. Spokane also is home to our next stop, the Bing Crosby memorabilia collection in the Crosbyana Room at Gonzaga University where he attended law school. I was astounded at the display of products that were made back in the day, with Bing Crosby’s picture and brand. Spokane was also Mr. Crosby’s boyhood home, the original Craftsman-style family home located nearby on land now owned by Gon- zaga University. We walked over to the Crosby home, thinking ‘more tour’. It was all decked out in the ‘White Christmas’ theme—tree, lights, the works! And tables set for, surprise! Christmas dinner, hosted by Spokane CVB, specially prepared for this occa- sion! We each received a holiday-wrapped souvenir DVD of “White Christmas”, one of Bing Crosby’s most famous films. At photo time, we all spontaneously, instead of ‘cheese’, smiled and said, musically, in chorded harmony, “Bingggg!” Now I will watch the movie with a whole new perspective, as is happen- ing with every other facet of this trip. Day 2 started with a Davenport gourmet breakfast and a briefing on the day’s ride. We also met Kathy and Kathleen from Lady Rose (Lady Riders Of SpokanE), who would honor us with an escort out of Spokane and would meet up with us again on the last leg of our trip from the other side of the loop back to Spokane in a few days. We loaded Carol’s chase van, suited up, and got on the road, Kathy and Kathleen up front, peeling off just outside town. Diane took over, we settled into a group formation, heading up Hwy. 2. We pull into our first stop at Newport, WA, welcomed by Loyce Acres at the Chamber of Commerce office, Visitor Center and Museum, with an original steam-driven sawmill generator “The Big Wheel” out front. New- port I recall in bright sun, lots of open sky; the south- ernmost main point on the Selkirk Loop. Clean and small-town-ish, a few intersections and fewer stop- lights. Established in 1889, Newport has many orig- inal historic buildings. I’m starting to fantasize about remote-small-town life. Heading out of Newport, through big stretches of wetlands and forest, we cross into Idaho. Looking up left I see a succession of power poles with cross- beams up top, and what I learn later were osprey nests on top—made of branches (not sticks) woven tightly together and at least 4 feet wide. Ospreys are big birds of prey, only a little smaller than eagles. Our route on Hwy 2 took us to a stop along the shores of Lake Pend Oreille (Pond’-o-ray), meaning “ear pendant”, after early French explorers’ term for the people of the land they traded with, the ‘dangle- earring people’. This lake, 43 miles long, 6 miles wide and over 1,000 feet deep, is the 13th largest lake in the world. We can see far shores and our own part of the shoreline for quite a ways unobstructed by trees etc., and there is no one around, except us. Only a few cars go by in our 20 minutes there. We continue along the lake shore to Sandpoint, Idaho for lunch, armed with a self-guided walking tour map. Sandpoint is historically-minded but also modern, with the Cedar Street Bridge Public Mar- ket— a marketplace experience in a huge log struc- ture on Sand Creek. Sheryl, one of the riders in our group, calls Sandpoint home. Leaving Sandpoint we take the Lake Pend Oreille/Kootenai River Super Side Trip south/east on Hwy 200. We enter Montana and turn north on Hwy. 56 to meet up with Hwy 2 again and east 3 miles to Kootenai Falls, the filming location for the River Wild (Kevin Bacon/Meryl Streep). I hike down the trail through thick forest, and catch the freight train thundering underneath me as I walk across the for- est footbridge above the tracks. On the cliffs at river’s edge, the others have hiked upriver a ways, and I am alone here with my camera and the rapids and falls – as I make my way back up to the top, I meet no one else on the half-mile trail. As to the lo- gistics, I wondered, how in the world did they stage filming here. Perched on an outcrop of rock? I guess so..!! But what a spot… Next month, on to Bonners Ferry and a run for the Canadian Border! Well, they aren’t really monsters, but when they are breathing in my face before I’ve had a chance to fully open my eyes, they sure seem like monsters! I depend on these two as a confidant when I need one, a friendly face at the end of a long day and a reminder that life is pretty darn good. They depend on me for everything. In return they give me unconditional love. Sometimes that love comes in the form of a big lick in the face at the first stir of the sheets (that would be Jenny-Jenny). For some, that furry friend who waits patiently at the bedside for the sheets to stir isn’t waiting for breakfast. This four legged companion is waiting to provide the assistance he knows his owner will need. He will perform tasks that many of us take for granted every day. Simple things such as turning light switches on and off, opening and closing doors and drawers, pushing el- evator buttons, retrieving dropped items, help with dressing and undressing and above all, providing love and companionship. Each dog specializes in his/her “field”. There are Service Dogs who are skilled to do many tasks for people with disabilities and provide a variety of complex tasks. The Home Helpmate dogs provide much the same help as service dogs but are mainly for people with in-home attendant care. The Psych/Social Dogs are wonderful dogs that have been trained to provide help with disorders such as phobias and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Another type of assis- tance dog is the Hearing Dog who alerts the deaf of sounds they need to be aware of in their environment. All dogs except the Home Helpmates have complete public access. Training one of these dogs is a long, complex and expensive process. Power Paws is one organization that trains assistance dogs and is located in Scotts- dale AZ. They train Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers in 90 com- mands to assist individuals with disabilities. Most dogs are placed with an individual within one to two years. This may seem like a long time, but it is one of the shortest waiting times in the industry. For more information on Power Paws, visit their website at<a href="http://www.powerpaws.org"> http://www.powerpaws.org.</a> To fully train an assistance dog costs about $20,000! It’s rides like the one we went on that makes it possible for Power Paws to place a dog for a minimal fee. The ride itself was your traditional poker run with five stops. The last being at Alice Cooperstown. I have been to this venue for ball games and other down- town activities, but never on a bike run. What a great idea. Everyone knows Alice has the best bar-b-que. So to have it as the traditional biker fare was a real treat. Faded Jeans played some good cover rock and got the crowd danc- ing. No one seemed to be in a hurry to leave. Maybe it was the band, the dogs roaming around or the cool fall afternoon on the patio or maybe all of the above. Whatever it was, it helped a great cause and let us get to know some really amazing furry creatures. 39
42page

40
43page

41
44page

42
45page

43
46page

When I heard about the “We Ride for Smiles” benefit ride, I knew this was one I had to be part of. Anyone who knows me can tell you how impor- tant dental hygiene is to me. My Mother educated me on the impor- tance of brushing and flossing regu- larly. Unfortunately, children living in poverty are far less educated about dental hygiene and suffer twice the tooth decay as their peers with higher income. Today’s ride was a benefit for funding a mobile dental clinic, which provides den- tal services and education for under priv- ileged children ages 2-20 years. The goal of the Community Dental Foundation is to help children address oral health issues as well as attain confidence and self esteem. The founders got together and created a mobile unit which travels to shelters, com- munity centers, schools, and other high risk areas of the valley. I was shocked to discover that 75% of the children seen at this mobile unit have never been to a den- tist. The event was coordinated by Melissa and Dawn of “Two Gals Event Planning”. They did an excellent job choosing a route with nice long stretches to ride and some great resting places. Rather than the traditional Poker Run, we went on a “Yahtzee Run”, a nice twist on the usual! Each stop in- cluded two rolls of five dice hoping to get the high score. The starting point was Buddy Stubbs Harley-Davidson on Cave Creek Rd where they offered a pancake breakfast for all registered riders. The community dental mobile unit was available to tour. On the tour I learned this vehicle is fully equipped with everything one would find in a regu- lar dentists’ office, and able to offer full service dental care, cleanings, x-rays and even extractions. After our tour, we jumped on our bikes for a nice long stretch of nothing but desert, blue skies and cool air. It was a perfect day for a ride out to Waddell’s Longhorn Corral lo- cated in Buckeye, AZ. I must say Waddell’s is in the top three for the best burger I have ever had. The service was top notch, our bartender was quick with our order, and the friendly staff was helpful with directions to our next stop. After lunch, we hit the road for a gorgeous 40 mile stretch on the Sun Valley Parkway to Wild Horse West Saloon in Peoria, AZ. Their slogan is “Where the Burgers are the Best”. Since I had no room for another, I will have to plan a ride there and taste for my- self. They have a great back patio and have been serving food and drinks in this loca- tion since the ‘70’s. From Wild Horse West Saloon we pro- ceeded on the Carefree Highway and took I-17 north to our next stop, Buddy Stubbs Harley Davidson - Anthem. Then it was off to our final stop just north about 2 miles. Our host was “Gavilan Peak Sports Bar and Grill”. This restaurant and bar is conve- niently located on Black Canyon Hwy (Frontage Rd) off I-17 at the New River exit, then go south about 200 yards to find this great place! The festivities included enter- tainment by the “Weezul Brothers Band”, as well as an auction, raffle, and buffet. Checking out one of their two outside pa- tios which includes a pool table and plenty of outdoor seating is a must. (From per- sonal experience, the menu is also great!!) To sum it up, we rode about 125 miles in perfect weather and enjoyed the beautiful desert, found new locations for those weekend rides, and enjoyed good music and great food. You can’t beat that on a Sunday afternoon… Best of all, it was for a great cause!
