Then the bear answered beating his chest  with his own paws, “Bo, I would do anything  to be a human being.” <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=28&amp;vmode=full">28page</a><br><br> “Well, couldn’t we find a way to become  human beings?” the two beasts thought  together <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=29&amp;vmode=full">29page</a><br><br> “Shall we go to Hwanung who has heavenly  powers and ask a favor of him?” thought the  bear. <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=30&amp;vmode=full">30page</a><br><br> So the two animals agreed to go to the  Shindansu tree everyday to pray for their  wish. <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=31&amp;vmode=full">31page</a><br><br> Then, one day, Hwanung was so moved by  their sincerity that he asked them in a low  voice, “Do you really want to become human  beings?” <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=32&amp;vmode=full">32page</a><br><br> “I see.  Then I will give you two a task,”  Hwanung said, handing a handful of heavenly  wormwoods and twenty cloves of garlic to  each animal. <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=33&amp;vmode=full">33page</a><br><br> Hwanung continued, “Both of you will  stay in a cave for one hundred days,  eating only the wormwoods and garlic.”  <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=34&amp;vmode=full">34page</a><br><br> However, the wormwood and garlic were too  bitter and hot for them to eat.  The two  animals also wanted very much to go out of  the dark cave and play in the sunshine. <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=35&amp;vmode=full">35page</a><br><br> After a while, the tiger finally began to feel stuffy and  almost went crazy. “Ah!  I can’t stand this any longer!” exclaimed the tiger as  he ran out of the cave.  “I am hungry and I want to see the  sunshine before I become a human.” <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=36&amp;vmode=full">36page</a><br><br> Meanwhile, the bear endured the hard life for  one hundred days, eating only wormwood  and garlic.  On the one hundredth day, a  flower bloomed on her knee. <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=37&amp;vmode=full">37page</a><br><br> The bear went down to the pond and bowed  to the tree before bathing. As soon as she  did this, the hair on her body disappeared  and smooth human skin appeared in its place! <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=38&amp;vmode=full">38page</a><br><br> Her face became beautiful. Seeing her new face in  the pond, the bear was so happy that tears of joy  ran down her face .“Oh, how beautiful!” she  exclaimed. <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=39&amp;vmode=full">39page</a><br><br> This bear-turned woman was called Ungnyo  by the people.  Ungnyo began her new life in  a small hut on the silent mountain with a  beautiful view. <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=40&amp;vmode=full">40page</a><br><br> Although it was nice, Ungnyo was very lonely  living by herself.  “I wish I could have a  husband to live with,” said Ungnyo. <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=41&amp;vmode=full">41page</a><br><br> She went to the Shindansu tree and prayed to  Hwanung, “Dear Hwanung, please send me a  man to be my husband.” <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=42&amp;vmode=full">42page</a><br><br> Hwanung decided to answer her prayer once  again.  He turned himself into a strudy,  handsome young man and                                 appeared before Ungnyo. “Ungnyo, I will be  your husband.”  <br><a href="viewContents.asp?seq=111373&amp;path=&amp;page=43&amp;vmode=full">43page</a><br><br> Hwanung married Ungnyo and they lived  together in the small hut on the mountain.
