C O M It’s been a scary year. It’s like we’ve been stuck in a constant downpour – but it’s not rain we’ve been pelted with, it’s meteors. Falling home prices. Budget cuts. Layoffs. After every blow, I’ve tried to reassure my- self: “Maybe this is the last of the storm. I mean, how much worse can it get?” And then comes another stream of meteors. Foreclosures. Bankruptcies. More layoffs. A close member of my family was laid off in May. At first, she took it in stride. She never had trouble finding work before. Not once in her 20-something years of adulthood had she been unemployed. She had been laid off a few years ago, and by the end of the day, she had another position lined up. Why would it be any different now? She’s respected in her industry, and she’s made a lot of connec- tions over the years. She didn’t waste any time. She started making phone calls the moment she walked out of the office. Her leads dried up after a few weeks. So she gave herself five months. Surely, she’d be able to land a position in her field of work by then. Five months came and went , and her savings account was shrinking fast . She had enough money in the bank to cover one more month’s rent, and that was it. Scary. She’d been working a few freelance jobs, and the money from those projects helped make ends meet. But it wasn’t enough to cover even her basic living expenses. So she opened herself up to other oppor- tunities – even jobs that some might con- sider entry-level. She interviewed for a receptionist position. Overqualified. She registered with a temp agency and was called to answer phones at a car dealership. She was excited – actually excited. Then she got a call saying the dealership didn’t need her services after all. She was offered a job working, essentially, in telephone sales. She took it. Then, just days before she was scheduled to start work, she got a break. A company that enjoys a solid reputation around the world had downsized, and they needed someone with her same skill set to work as a freelancer. There were several projects that had to be completed, which meant she’d be busy for a good stretch of time, and the company would pay her handsomely. She wouldn’t have to report to the office more than two days a week, and the hours on those two days were flexible. Best of all, the position could become permanent. She jumped at the opportunity. Her plan: Work hard, demonstrate her talent and convince the company that if they hired her on permanently, she could save the firm money and maintain – even exceed – the existing level of quality. That was a month ago. She loves the gig. Sure, she’s had to sacrifice the benefits of permanent, full-time employment – health insurance, vacation pay, etc. But she’s able to work independently, and she has a steady paycheck coming in. So what’s the lesson? Maybe it’s that with the end of the reces- sion comes a dawn of opportunities. But we’ll need to adopt a new way of thinking in order to see them. Maybe we’ll need to sac- rifice some things, but they’ll be replaced by something else. And maybe, just maybe, that something else is even better. Now that’s not scary at all. ocm Is the meteor shower over yet? It’s been a year of heavy downpour. But, hopefully, with the end of the storm will come a dawn of opportunity. Why I am an Ironman Competing in triathlons whips my body – and my life – into shape. With any luck, by the time you read this, I will be an “Ironman squared.” On Thanks- giving weekend Sunday, I competed in my second Ironman triathlon. That means while you were eating turkey-day leftovers and watching football on TV, I was swim- ming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles and then running a marathon, 26.2 miles, in Cozumel, Mexico. Why? Good question. In part, as British moun- taineer George Leigh Mallory said about climbing Mt. Everest, “Because it’s there.” But it’s more than that. It’s about doing something special. We all like to be unique. Some people do it the easy way – a tattoo or a crazy hair style takes no effort – but in doing an Ironman, training is a process that requires discipline over a long period of time. The Ironman motto is “Anything is pos- sible.” I’ve seen an 80-year-old man and athletes with only one leg cross the finish line of an Ironman. Anyone can do it. You simply have to put in the time. It’s about finding the fountain of youth. I got into the sport at age 42. I was an out-of- shape father of four. Triathlons gave me a goal, and swimming, biking and running provided the perfect blend of cross-training. I needed a race looming to get me off the couch and into the game. Since I started triathlons, I’ve dropped 10 pounds of fat, added muscle and feel better than I did in my 20s or 30s. My jeans are falling off of me. And when I go to the doctor, the nurses always com- ment on my low pulse and blood pressure. It’s about being selfish. In today’s hectic world, it seems indulgent to take time for yourself. But that’s what you get from competing in triathlons. You have to take time out from the day. It might be early in the morning, at lunch or late at night, but you find the time. And it has long-term, positive results. It’s about learning about myself. Training is better than therapy. It allows you to be alone with your thoughts. That is a valuable commodity in today’s world. During my swims, bike rides and runs, I’ve solved per- plexing business problems, ironed out con- flicts with my boys, dreamed up ideas for my writing and set goals for the future. The outside world melts away, leaving just me. Before this year’s race, I pasted a quote from Ironman legend Mark Allen on my of- fice wall and my car dashboard: “In my fail- ures, I saw the darkest part of myself, where I was weak, where expectations did not meet reality. Until you face your fears, you don’t move to the other side, where you find the power.” For most of my life, I ran away from my fears. But the sport of triathlon has caused me to act differently. Triathlons have forced me to run (and swim and bike) toward what scares me. And that’s rubbed off on my business and personal life. This time of year, most of us think about New Year’s resolu- tions. Let me suggest one: Take up the sport of triathlon and sign up for a shorter race this summer (trifind.com). That way, your resolution will last past Jan. 15. Anyone can do it, because anything is possible. ocm perspective W I L L I A M L O B D E L L A N I N S I D E R ’ S T A K E O N T H E S T A T E O F O . I intend to ask each individual how he wants to see S SPRO improve, where they want to see more results. I will pose the ques- tion, “ hat would you change if you were the CEO?” I want to re-empower them, regardless of this economy. C O M We are entering a new era in the produc- tion of ethanol and other alternative fuels to replace gasoline and diesel. And BlueFire Ethanol Fuels is leading the way. The Irvine-based company, named one of the top bio-energy companies in 2008-2009, has revolutionized how fuels are produced, converting organic waste paper and vegetable scraps, among other items, into ethanol that can be sold locally. How did this idea become a reality? Company founders played with the no- tion that feedstock is essentially worth- less. Landfill operators are required to pay $6 for every ton of trash they elimi- nate. BlueFire Ethanol converts that waste into ethanol, allowing the landfill operators to eliminate a significant ex- pense and qualify for “carbon credits.” This works as a conceptual food chain, with landfill operators at the bottom, BlueFire Ethanol in the middle and consumers at the top. We’ll ultimately utilize the waste in some form, instead of leaving it in the landfills. “It is an honor to have been recog- nized for innovation and achievement in bio-energy by a highly respected indus- try authority,” says president and CEO of BlueFire Ethanol, Arnold R. Klann. For a company that entered the pub- lic market in 2006, that is an impressive and respectable debut. A recent study found that the biomass ethanol firm has the potential to grow into a $1.5 billion company in only five years, and with proper financing, it could become worth $3 billion in 10 years. With its growth, company leaders intend to create a larger business that owns bio-refineries that produce ethanol in the cheapest and simplest way possible. BlueFire’s objective is to become a leading firm that creates and supplies liquid fuels by manufacturing ethanol. Priceless garbage? Here are a few of the best. Fitness dancing Have you ever seen a serious dancer who’s out of shape? Moving the legs, hips and arms to the beat of salsa or samba music sounds a heck of a lot better than running on a treadmill. That’s the message that Century Ballroom owner Eddie Alba wants to get across. Alba launched a series of classes aimed at introducing people to dance as exercise. “There are short-term and long- term benefits, and it’s much more fun than going to the gym,” says Alba. “A two-hour session is the same as run- ning 4 miles.” century-ballroom.com Hot yoga Bikram Yoga is the hottest new workout in town – literally. Performed in a 105-degree room, this intense se- ries of 26 yoga poses over 90 minutes is designed to warm up muscles, ten- dons, ligaments and joints to facilitate a safer and more intense practice. Also, the heat expands blood vessels, which promotes circulation. Since skin is our largest organ, the quickest way to remove toxins is through sweat. Think yoga is more relaxing than demanding? Think again. Bikram Yoga is intensely challenging for the highly conditioned, but that shouldn’t deter beginners. bikramyogairvine Boot it Transform Fitness Camp is a four- week outdoor program for women of all ages and fitness levels. Created by Rachael Cadden, certified wellness and life strategies coach, the program was designed to have all the intensity of traditional boot camp, but tailored specifically for women. The workout uses 5- to 10-pound weights to boost the metabolism and keep the fat burning hours after the workout is done. While no two classes are the same, each workout includes a warm-up, core work, stretching and cool-down. transformfitnesscamp.com life wellness by OC METRO staff Best O.C. workouts 7 8 O C M E T R O . C O M spa by Samantha May Taking time to visit the Jack Winn Salon is highly recommended, espe- cially when life is in full motion. When you walk into the trendy salon, with its open lighting and artsy décor, you will find a hub of activity, especially at 10 a.m. on a Saturday, when I visited. I was escorted to the Body Center, tucked away in a dimmed room located at the back of the spa – satin robe and soothing music included. The salon’s many treatments include On The Rocks, an anti-aging, antioxidant facial that treats sun damage and stimulates cellular regeneration, and the Renew Facial, a pumpkin-enzyme peel that promotes new cell production. Jack Winn found a great asset in es- thetician Megan Alderson, whose facial technique is slightly atypical of the or- dinary mask treatment. Megan uses her soothing voice, magic hands and way of knowing what the face needs by asking a few simple questions. She in- corporates a full-face treatment that includes a deep muscle massage and a process that eliminates excess toxins from the body, allowing the face to feel tightened and refreshed. After my treatment, a fellow client told me that my face was glowing. As I politely accepted her compliment, I mentioned that I’d just had one of the best experiences of my life, and that I was officially addicted. With time to spare, I got my eye- brows waxed by Lisa Le, a makeup artist and eyebrow genius. She as- sessed my face’s shape and sculpted my brows for optimum effect. Lisa’s specialty is permanent makeup; she’s so talented, even the most critical eye would be fooled into believing that the look she creates is completely natural. Offering a soothing, calming atmos- phere and service by a friendly, profes- sional staff, the Jack Winn Salon is an awesome place to wind down and take a quick breather from the daily rigors of life. C O M life In our look back over 2009, we exam- ined the impact of the economy on how people work and play. Leisure and tourism is a major industry in Orange County, and it was certainly not im- mune to the effects of the economy. How did local hospitality weather 2009 s torrent of economic change? The Resort at Pelican Hill: After more than 20 years in the making, it opened at the end of 2008 to rave re- views. However, the full-service luxury property originally positioned as an in- ternational travel destination ran head- on into a devastating global economy. Undaunted, the resort touted its strengths: 36 holes of world-class golf, an award-winning spa, 128 luxury vil- las, 204 private bungalows, three pools and five restaurants and caf s, includ- ing the acclaimed Andrea. The result: The bulk of the resort s clientele dur- ing its first year came from Orange, Los Angeles and San Diego counties, says spokeswoman Landry Fuller. In November, it was announced that both the resort and spa were awarded AAA Five-Diamond status, and the Spa at Pelican Hill is the only one in Cali- fornia to receive both the Forbes and AAA Five-Diamond award during its first year. pelicanhill.com Shorebreak Hotel: Opened in mid- March amid fanfare as a luxury lifestyle beachfront property, Joie de Vivre Hotels newest lodging offered a tempting promotional rate celebrating Huntington Beach s centennial: For 100 days of summer, rooms were offered for the nightly rate of 100, available to residents living within 100 miles of Huntington Beach. shorebreakhotel.com The Island Hotel: Like Pelican Hill, The Island Hotel is owned by The Irvine Co. Relaxing near the water, members and guests can enjoy charter sailing excur- sions that depart from the docks only steps from their rooms. Besides all the luxuries of a full resort and club, the Back Bay Resort also features the Terrace Apartments, with bay-front views, luxury amenities and pri- vate beach, pool, members-only fine dining and fitness facilities. A special 100-day club promotion was launched this summer to show locals that membership does, indeed, have its privileges. bbcr.com The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel: This landmark Orange County resort continued to do what it does best. Its trademark serv- ice model is internationally renowned, and its location is ideal. Situated on a prime stretch of coast, it features six dining ven- ues, including Eno, an upscale wine tasting room with more than 300 labels, along with delicious artisan cheeses and chocolates. This large number of vacancies adds to the glut of available lodging currently on the market, creating a bigger vacuum for demand. After no bidders came forward for the foreclosure auction, ownership of the St. Regis Monarch Beach reverted to Citigroup through an agreement between the bank and the previous owners. Newport Beach native and UC Riverside MFA graduate Victoria Patterson has created a literary version of “The OC” in her short story collection, “Drift.” Like the popular nighttime soap opera, Patterson’s stories are set in Newport Beach and are full of pretty scenery and angst; characters are struggling with sexual identity, floored by infidelity and divorce, and confused by the inherent cruelty of relationships. That said, the stories are very good. Patterson uses precise and unexpected details to create convincing scenes and capture the ambience of the seaside restaurants, yacht harbors and broken homes that her characters inhabit. The characters tend to be sad and confused much of the time, but there are also moments of deliverance and connection that relieve the misery. Patterson traces the psychological and social subtleties of both grim and hopeful interludes with great skill. She often surprises the reader in a number of good ways, and manages to imbue small-scale emotional dramas with substantial suspense. BLOOD’S A ROVER By James Ellroy, Knopf, 2009 $28.95 Ellroy, SoCal’s hardest-hitting crime fiction writer, concludes his mid- century American history trilogy that covers 1968 to 1972 and features a crazy, compelling mix of historical and fictional characters. THE LOST SYMBOL By Dan Brown, Doubleday, 2009 $29.95 Brown’s third Robert Langer thriller looks at Freemasonry and revolves around a Capitol Hill conspiracy. In his three decades performing in the cast, Landon has missed only three shows. For two seasons, he even took to the stage with a broken toe. You’ll see a lot of new faces among the many cast veterans this year – all 16 of the child performers are newcomers to the production. But Daniel Blinkoff (Bob Cratchet), Jennifer Parsons (Mrs. Cratchet), Karen Hensel (Mrs. Fezziweg) and Tom Sheldon (Marley and the Spirit of Christmas Yet-to-Come) will all take the stage in their familiar roles. Since its founding 45 years ago, South Coast Repertory has grown to become recognized as one of the nation’s top professional theaters. In addition to presenting classic and modern theater works, SCR devotes a great deal of effort toward new-play development. And its efforts have enjoyed great success. The evidence: The SCR-developed “Wit,” by Margaret Edson, won a Pulitzer Prize in 1999, and several other works have landed nominations over the years. culture by Tina Borgatta & arts ANDREA BOCELLI Honda Center, Dec. 13 Celebrated Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli will delight his Orange County fans at the Honda Center on Dec. 13 with a mix of holiday favorites. Lakers’ run to the NBA champi- onship in June, the 15th title in the club’s storied history, stands out as OC METRO’s best sports story of 2009. While the Lakers are based in the City of Angels, local basketball fans have backed the squad for more than four decades. Orange County’s connection to the Lakers was strengthened back in 2002, when Hall of Fame shoo-in Kobe Bryant purchased a $4 million Mediterranean- style home in Newport Coast. To this day, the superstar can be seen driving on the 405 in his Ferrari for home games and practices. (Bryant’s willing- ness to commute so far speaks volumes about the exclusive neighborhood and the surrounding O.C. region.) And in August, Bryant – along with his wife, Vanessa, and the couple’s two adorable girls – helped open Pretend City, a new hands-on children’s museum in Irvine that’s getting rave reviews. The Lakers dispatched the Utah Jazz, the Houston Rockets and the Denver Nuggets in the post-season before facing the Orlando Magic in the NBA Finals. After smoking the highly re- garded Magic four games to one, Bryant won his first NBA championship with- out the help of center Shaquille O’Neal. Will the 2009-2010 season bring back-to-back titles? Only time will tell. PLAYFAIR ON A DO N NOTE, T O O.C. SPORTS STORIES STOOD OUT AS THE ORST IN 2009: The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, which posted the Major League’s No. 2 regular season record, were KNOCKED OUT OF THE AMERI- CAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES four games to two by the team that posted the best regular season mark: the New ork ankees. The star-stocked team from the Big Apple went on to win the orld Series. Last July, UC Irvine Athletic Director Mike Izzi announced that the univer- sity was CUTTING FIVE INTER- COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC TEAMS due to state budget constraints: men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s rowing, and sailing. “The impact this has on (UCI) coaches and student-athletes is something that none of us wishes to see,” Izzi told the L.A. Times last summer. “But the reality is that this type of move is unavoidable with the financial challenges that we face.” UCI will honor the affected student-athletes’ scholarships in the 2009-2010 academic year. sports by Larry Urish 2009 NBA champs 9 0 D E C E M B E R 2 0 0 9 O C M E T R O . By the time you’ve read this, it’ll all be over. Lutz’s bravura about the CTS-V’s racetrack potential is not without substance. “We know that some consumers still think Cadillac cars do not have the top-end performance they believe the German luxury cars have,” he says. “The development ob- jective of the 556-horsepower Cadillac CTS-V was to create the world’s best high-performance sedan. In final testing, the car lapped the legendary Nurburgring in 7:59.32, fastest ever for a production sedan.” (The record was recently eclipsed, reportedly, by Porsche’s Panamera). We’ll soon see. At the center of the hullabaloo is this alpha male among GM sedans – the company’s all-time swiftest four-door car. While the basic CTS is a terrific vehi- cle (particularly when powered by the 304-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6), the CTS-V tip-toes on the terrifying. Propelling the “V” is a detuned version of the Corvette ZR1’s 638 horsepower 6.2-liter supercharged V8, in Cadillac guise funneling 556 ponies and 551 lb.-ft. of torque through a six-speed, paddle-shift automatic transmission. Tires are 255/40-19s in the front and a whopping 285/35-19s in the rear, with all of them deftly suspended by what GM calls Magnetic Ride Control. The result is a giant grip for a car that can turn and stop as spectacularly as it accelerates – think 0 to 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds. Negatives? Well, the CTS-V isn’t exactly library-reading- room quiet inside, and while the interior’s quality has markedly raised its game, here and there are still bits with a thin-gauge feel about them. And, the styling – to me, at least – is getting awfully Darth Vadery. Still, shock and awe is exactly what Cadillac set out to illicit when it decided to pretty much abandon its traditional platinum-haired, plaid-panted buyers for a younger audience a few years ago. What’s so amusing is that it’ll be a 77-year-old behind the wheel who’ll be trying to seal the deal. Kim Reynolds is technical editor of Motor Trend magazine. 94 O C M E T R O . C O M A friend once asked me where she and her husband should go for a romantic dinner. They were newlyweds and celebrating their one-month anniversary or some such lovey-dovey occasion. My answer – a no-brainer – was 21 Oceanfront. I can’t think of a more romantic place to mark a special occasion. The food is phenomenal – prime steaks (filet mignon, bone-in rib-eye, even Steak Diane grace the menu) and a selection of fresh seafood (ahi, Pacific salmon, Chilean seabass, Baja abalone and, of course, crab and lobster). And the location is almost impossible to beat: a prime corner spot in McFadden Square with a perfect view of the Newport Beach Pier and Blackie’s, a popular stretch of coast for surfers of all ages, skill and style. The restaurant entrance faces the ocean, and it offers the first indication of the charming experience that awaits you. There’s a 19th-century ambience about this place, and you’re likely to notice it the moment you approach the restaurant. Its classic architecture and styling set the tone for what you’ll find inside – a rich, warm dining room with vintage lighting, leather-booth seating and velvet-covered chairs around the tables. But the ambience doesn’t mean a whole lot if the food isn’t quality. That’s not a problem here. The chef handpicks the steaks and seafood that will be prepared that same day. You’ll find many creative preparations right alongside the classics. The Black & Blue Ahi, for example, is seared rare and served over red cabbage with a red wine sauce. Oh, and be sure to try the Au Gratin Potatoes – I’ve been told they’re an old family recipe. Really, just being there is a special occasion. So splurge, and start with one of the restaurant’s specialty appe- tizers, like the 21 Seafood Assortment on Ice – jumbo prawns, crab claws, sashimi, scallops, ceviche and lobster. There’s also the oven-baked Escargots de Bourgogne, bathed in butter and sprinkled with parsley. To end the experience on an even sweeter note, order one of 21 Ocean- front’s soufflés – chocolate, vanilla or Grand Marnier. You’ll be full, but so content – and, perhaps, ready for a romantic stroll along the beach. 21 Oceanfront dining review by Tina Borgatta life Location: e nf on e po e h Phone: Web: o e nf on om
99page

100page

The award-winning Back Bay Bistro in the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort in Newport Beach is the perfect spot for a front-row seat, as more than 50 Christmas trees will be illuminated in the 16th annual ighting of the Bay, which will be held on Friday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. Santa Claus will flip a giant light switch to mark the start of the holiday season. The public is invited to partici- pate in the free event, which will include tons of snow with slides for children, live music and caroling. The restaurant will offer seafood chowder and hot chocolate for a nominal price. You can t go wrong with JACKshrimp. JACKshrimp, the restaurant s signature dish that bears the eatery s name, is a family recipe from Louisiana. Shell-on shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico are cooked in a spicy, broth-like sauce that s perfect with French bread. On my visit to JACKshrimp, I was led out to a patio that overlooks PCH. From there I saw a glimmer of the Pacific, making it one of the most enjoyable places to spend an afternoon in Newport Beach. My meal started out with a shrimp soft taco. Every bite was worth the flavors that burst into my mouth. The Jammin Jambalaya, though, was my favorite. A spicy Cajun dish composed of chicken, andouille sausage, bell peppers and onions served on a bed of rice, it offers a spicy kick that slowly builds as the meal progresses. I was so busy spooning in more of the savory mixture, I wasn t bothered by the increasing intensity of the spices. For a dish that doesn t pack a lot of heat, but doesn t skimp on flavor, I recommend the Sweet Thing. Vermi- celli pasta creates a base for chicken and shrimp served in a basil-garlic white-wine sauce topped with a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese. And to finish it off, there s JACKshrimp s chocolate bread pudding a rich, potent treat served with vanilla ice cream. With food like this, and lunch-sized portions available all day, it is no wonder diners return again and again. Everyday prices and generous helpings, not to mention excellent service and terrific food, make JACKshrimp the perfect place to enjoy a lunch with friends. lunch review by Breanna Moore SUNDA BRUNCH ..................SB BREAKFAST ..............................B LUNCH ......................................L DINNER ....................................D ENTERTAINMENT ....................E HAPP HOUR ..........................H CATERING ................................
